About Book: | Examinations have been an indispensable necessity. They cannot be completely done away with. In any education system, they must occupy an important place. Yet the way and the form in which they are held in India need reform. There are so many serious defects in the present system of examination that their purpose is completely defeated. They fail in measuring the progress of students, in assessing their expressive powers, and in evaluating their critical thinking. Therefore, in the 1st section of the book, the author has emphasized the urgent need for the over-hauling of the present system of examinations through an analytical discourse on the examination system during pre- and post- independence period and on the reports and recommendations of different education commissions and committees during the period. In the second part, the author has presented a comparative analysis on the workability and contextual suitability of different types of examinations such as written vs. oral, theory vs. practical, and semester vs. annual. Further, advantages and limitations of long answer type, short answer type, objective type, and multiple choice tests have been discussed with reference to their reliability, and validity of assessment. In subsequent sections, methods of investigation, results and findings are reported from an empirical study conducted to investigate the existing system of examinations in the colleges of Odisha under the Utkal University and Sambalpur University. Finally, some guidelines are suggested to bring about necessary changes in the current examination system of India. |
